Vermont Governor Phil Scott has been reelected to a third two-year term. The Republican bested Democratic/Progressive Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman.

Scott, whom many consider a moderate Republican, has criticized President Donald Trump and said Tuesday that he voted for former Vice President Joe Biden.

“I didn’t support President Trump," Scott said. "I wasn’t going to vote for him. But then I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t enough for me to just not vote. I had to vote against. I had to put country over party, which again wasn’t an easy thing to do in some respects.”

Scott said it is the first time he voted for a Democrat for president.

Scott largely held off on campaigning during the coronavirus pandemic. Vermont has had some of the lowest COVID-19 case numbers. Scott delivered a virtual victory speech Tuesday night.

"I ran for governor because I believe Vermont can be a stronger and more diverse economy," Scott said. "Be more affordable for families and businesses and create more opportunities for our kids. I believe the best way to have the resources to take care of those in need, protect our environment and address climate change is to grow the economy in all 251 communities."

Zuckerman is a 48-year-old farmer from Hinesburg who campaigned on promises to do more to advance progressive causes like having wealthy people pay more in taxes and doing more to combat climate change.
