As positive cases of COVID-19 mount at a Williamstown, Massachusetts nursing home, family members of the residents are reacting.

Sergio Demo’s mother, Filomena, has been a resident of Williamstown Commons for the past five years. Now that cases of coronavirus have spiked from 1 on Tuesday to 14 on Friday, Demo says he’s concerned – but has confidence in the center and its staff. WAMC asked him what he’d say to his mother if he had the chance.

“I’d say mom, stay safe," said Demo. "We’re going to get you to April 8th, which is her 104th birthday. And we’ll get a cake, and we’ll celebrate.”

On Friday, the center said that 23 of its 134 residents have been tested, with 14 positives, 5 negatives, and 4 awaiting results.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
