Momentum Seen Building For Plastic Bag Ban In Massachusetts

Apr 5, 2019

Bills have been filed in the Massachusetts Legislature to ban retailers from handing out single-use plastic shopping bags. Merchants groups said they'd be willing to accept a statewide ban, with certain conditions, in order to eliminate the patchwork of local ordinances.

New York, beginning next March, will ban retailers from giving customers single-use plastic shopping bags. Is Massachusetts next?

More than 90 communities in Massachusetts, including Boston, already have restrictions in place. The Pittsfield City Council recently passed a plastic bag ordinance.  The Springfield City Council has a public hearing scheduled next week.

A statewide ban was the subject of a legislative hearing at the State House this week.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Janet Domenitz, executive director of MassPIRG.
