Feb 21, 2020

Massachusetts transportation officials launched a campaign weeks in advance of the new law's effective date to alert motorists of the changes. For the first few weeks, police will issue only warnings. Citations with hefty escalating fines can be issued starting April 1st.

A new distracted driving law takes effect this weekend in Massachusetts.

Beginning Sunday, February 23rd, drivers in Massachusetts will be forbidden from using any electronic device unless it is in hands-free mode.

State and local police will enforce the law.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill got details about the new law’s “dos and don’ts” from Ryan Walsh, the Public Information Officer for the Springfield Police Department.
