An explosion at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh has left one dead and dozens injured or trapped under the rubble, with emergency workers on site trying to rescue them. An Allegheny County spokesperson says the explosion happened Monday morning at the Clairton Coke Works. The plant is a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and is considered the largest coking operation in North America. The explosion sent black smoke spiralling into the midday sky in the Monongahela Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century.

The death of a 9-year-old girl whose father initially said she was missing and possibly abducted is being investigated amid what New York State Police call inconsistencies in the father's account. State police say that Melina Frattolin had been reported missing from Lake George in northeast New York state by her father, Luciano Frattolin, late Saturday evening. Law enforcement officials said Sunday they found the girl's body in the area of Ticonderoga, close to the Vermont line. The agency says there was no indication an abduction occurred. No charges have been announced, and law enforcement officials say a news conference is planned Monday.

The Senate has passed President Donald Trump’s big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts, with Vice President JD Vance breaking a 50-50 tie to push it over the top. The bill next goes back to the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana warned off big revisions from his chamber’s version. But senators did make changes, particularly to Medicaid health care.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned that the U.S. “will definitely pay a heavy price” should it attack Iran again. The comments on Thursday came in the wake of an attack on Sunday in which American forces hit three Iranian nuclear facilities with bunker-buster bombs and cruise missiles. Iran retaliated on Monday with a missile attack on a U.S. base in nearby Qatar. But it caused no casualties.

The man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another has been taken into custody, ending a nearly two-day search that put the entire state on edge. Vance Boelter was arrested Sunday evening. Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs. Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were injured at their Champlin home, about 9 miles away. Boelter was arrested in a rural area in Sibley County, southwest of Minneapolis.
