The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is directing a landfill across the river from the New York state capitol in Albany to reduce odors and improve operations.

DEC says the operators of the Dunn Landfill in the City of Rensselaer are required to take new steps to control odors and benefit local residents. DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the steps as part of a consent order with SA Dunn & Company Thursday.

Dunn is installing a gas collection system expected to be operational by May 6th. DEC says it will deploy four air monitoring devices that will test for hydrogen sulfide emissions. The operators are also required to increase the frequency the landfill covers waste on site from weekly to daily.

Last August, the operators were required to pay a $100,000 penalty to address dust and mining violations. A $225,000 payment was also made to the state’s Environmental Benefit Projects fund. DEC is putting that money toward a new playground at a local school, roadway, and stormwater upgrades, planting trees, and other neighborhood improvements.
