Schenectady City Council To Vote On Veto Override

The Schenectady city council is expected to vote Monday on a measure to override  Democratic Mayor Gary McCarthy’s veto of legislation that would prevent changes to the number of city court judges.

Mayor McCarthy has said maintaining four city court judges and fulfilling a request to provide new court space would be too expensive. One city court judge is approaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Citing a drop in caseloads in recent years, McCarthy argues three judges can adequately handle the amount of city court cases.

The measure to prevent any changes to the number of judges was brought by City Council President Ed Kosiur in February. The legislation passed 4 to 2 with one council member absent. Five votes are needed to override the mayor’s veto.
