The Albany Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred late Friday night.

Officers Elston Mackey and Derrick Ellis, both two-year veterans of the police force, responded to reports of a person with a weapon on the second floor of a Patridge Street residence around 11:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, the officers were informed by a nearby individual that a woman who appeared to be injured was at the bottom of a stairwell behind a locked door.

Police said officers forced entry and found an unresponsive woman stab wounds to the neck and face. Medical services were then dispatched to the scene.

While assessing the woman’s condition in the stairwell, 20-year-old Schuyler Lake reportedly walked down the stairs with a knife.

Police say officers commanded Lake to drop the knife through the broken glass of the door, but Lake refused and approached the woman, who would later be identified as Lake’s 52-year-old mother.

Lake reportedly then stabbed the victim in front of officers, who opened fire on Lake to prevent him from stabbing her further.

Lake was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother was treated at the scene and was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital where she is currently listed in critical condition.

Lake’s uncle was later located in the second-floor apartment with stab wounds to the abdomen. He was also treated at the scene and was brought to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Both officers were also evaluated at local hospitals and placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

Acting Chief of Police Robert Sears told WAMC that information has been shared with the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has also been notified per a state policy in the instance of a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Both officers were wearing body cameras. Police said footage will not be released at this time.
