NY Had No Hunting Fatalities In '15; 1st Time Since 1950s

State officials say New York got through the 2015 hunting season without a single shooting fatality, the first time that has happened since the 1950s.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says that there were 23 hunting incidents during the season, one fewer than the 2014 season and the third-lowest number on record.

The 2015 total included 10 self-inflicted injuries and 13 incidents involving hunters injuring others. DEC says that total is down from the 40 hunters who were injured in shooting incidents in 2010.

The 2015 season was the first without a hunting-related shooting fatality in New York since the state began keeping records of the incidents starting in the mid-1950s.

DEC officials credit the agency's hunter safety education safety programs with helping reduce the number of accidental shootings.
