NY Board Says Election Donor Limit Unenforceable

Following recent federal court decisions, New York's Board of Elections says the $150,000 limit on state campaign donations by an individual will no longer be enforced . That means an individual, or limited liability corporation, with deep pockets can contribute to as many statewide and state legislative candidates, political parties and advocacy groups as they wish, subject only to the recipients' restrictions.

For New York's statewide races — governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller — candidates can accept only $41,100 from an individual for the general election.

The limit is $10,100 for state Senate candidates and $4,100 for the Assembly.

A spokesman says the board — two Republicans and two Democrats — agreed last week the $150,000 individual donor limit is unenforceable, though the $5,000 corporate limit remains in effect.
