Celebrating an act of defiance that changed the country
Pittsfield, MA – Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks' stand on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, which resulted in the bus boycott and the eventual end of the so-called Jim Crow laws that enforced segregation in many states from the 1880s into the 1960s. "Jim Crow" was a black character in minstrel shows.
The city of Pittsfield, Massachusetts has declared it Rosa Parks Day.
This morning, Our Berkshire Bureau Chief, Carrie Saldo was there as students at Silvio O. Conte Community Elementary School, members of the Women of Color Giving Circle and others helped mark the occasion.
