Alas, Shakespeare & Company Calls Off Summer Season

Shakespeare & Company

Shakespeare & Company is the latest arts organizations to postpone its summer season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Citing safety concerns, the Lenox, Massachusetts-based theater company says it will not present its summer schedule starting in May as planned. Artistic Director Allyn Burrows says that much of its intended programming will roll over into next year, including a production of King Lear.

“That’s with the caveat that we can raise all the money for it," he told WAMC. "We have to look into the rights and feasibility of all the modern plays, but hopefully we can do as many of them as possible including Much Ado About Nothing out in the Roman Garden Theater.”

Shakespeare & Company is also canceling its summer education and actor training programs. At this time, the company still plans to proceed with its fall and winter schedule.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
