Governor Vetoes 24-Hour Wait Period For Handgun Purchases

Vermont Governor Phil Scott took action on a number of bills Monday, vetoing a measure to create a 24-hour waiting period to buy handguns.

Last year, the Republican approved bills that imposed universal background checks, raised the purchase age and banned the sale of high capacity magazines.

But Scott vetoed a measure passed this session to impose a 24-hour waiting period to buy handguns.   Scott says the bill did not address the “underlying causes of violence and suicide.”

Democratic Vermont Senate President Tim Ashe called the veto “massively disappointing” while Gun Sense Vermont claimed the governor “put the corporate gun lobby before…the well-being of Vermonters.”

The Vermont Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs supported a veto, saying a waiting period would be ineffective.
