Dartmouth College says it's planning to invest $200 million in a wood-burning power plant, hot water heating, and convert steam pipes in more than 110 buildings on campus.
The college currently gets its steam heat and some electricity from an oil-powered plant, which was built more than 120 years ago and was converted to oil from coal in 1958.
The Valley News reports the town of Hanover would have to approve the plan. The changes are expected to be completed in 2025. Dartmouth Executive Vice President Rick Mills said they would improve Dartmouth's heating efficiency by 20 percent almost immediately.
The college said the new biomass power plant would be built and operated by a private company in partnership with Dartmouth.
