Burlington Public Works Performing Storm Water Smoke Testing

Public Domain Pictures

The Burlington Public Works Department says it is conducting smoke tests to ensure the security of the city's sewage system.

The tests are a part of the Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination Program, and entail pouring a type of smoke into storm water pipes to see if the smoke leaks into sewer pipes. MyNBC5 reports residents may see an odorless and nontoxic smoke come out of drains and pipes in their homes.

Public works official Jenna Olson says the tests will begin Wednesday morning.

Burlington Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Murphy says they will be on alert for calls about the smoke, in case it looks suspicious. The Public Works Department also wants residents to contact them if they see smoke coming out of sewage outlets.
