On the last day of the current school year, a new contract has been finalized for teachers in the second-largest school district in Massachusetts.

The Springfield School Committee voted unanimously to approve a four-year deal with the Springfield Education Association, the union that represents 2,600 teachers.

It includes a compensation package that ensures all teacher salaries are raised to meet the average pay of teachers across western Massachusetts.

Mayor Domenic Sarno praised the new contract.

"It is very good for our school system and it is very good for education to have this competitive salary base," said Sarno.

Earlier, teachers ratified the contract by a reported vote of 90 percent.  The Springfield teachers worked the just finished school year without a contract.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
