South Burlington's emergency staff say they need a communications equipment upgrade, but City Council members and taxpayers are unsettled by the $1.9 million price tag.
The money for the improvements would be paid off by taxpayers over 10 years if an Aug. 9 bond vote approves the project.

The Burlington Free Press reports City Manager Kevin Dorn says the upgrade wasn't included in budget discussions this spring because the critical equipment failure occurred after those talks. The city's communications system is currently functioning on a backup.

Fire Chief Doug Brent explained that the radio used by fire, emergency medical and public works staff can't be replaced because it was discontinued by Motorola five years ago. Because of synergy between departments, an entire new system is needed.
