FAA Approves New Radar-Activated Lights For Wind Turbines

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a new system of warning lights for wind turbines in Lowell, Vermont.

Green Mountain Power promised to install radar-activated warning lights on 16 turbines that were put up in 2012.  State utility regulators had allowed regular red lights to go up while the company applied for the new lights with the FAA.

The Caledonian Record reports the new lights only activate when aircraft are nearby. The turbines' current red lights are on all the time.

The company says it's putting the new lights up to preserve the dark night sky along the Lowell Mountain ridgeline.

Officials say it could take a year before a vendor is chosen.
