Pittsfield's Affirmative Action Ordinance Clears Hurdle

Pittsfield is moving closer to enacting an ordinance designed to implement the city’s recently adopted affirmative action policy. The city council Ordinance and Rules Subcommittee voted 4 to 1 earlier this week in favor of an ordinance condensing Pittsfield’s affirmative action policy formally adopted in December. The ordinance would have the city recruit applicants from under-utilized populations and have an affirmative action officer appointed by the mayor investigative discrimination complaints. City Councilor Churchill Cotton helped move along the adoption of the affirmative action policy last year.

“People don’t want what’s happened to the last policy to happen to this one,” Cotton said. “That it just sit on a table and never referred to.”

The ordinance heads to the city council which next meets Sept. 29.
