A state budget cut targeted at people who get both state public assistance and Social Security disability payments is drawing a class-action lawsuit from Vermont Legal Aid.
Lawmakers this year passed a provision reducing state payments to such households by $125 per month. Legal Aid lawyer Christopher Curtis says the state is picking the pockets of the poor and disabled to solve its budget problems.
Notices were recently mailed to approximately 860 Vermont households advising them that their benefits would be reduced starting August 1st. Curtis says many households were taken by surprise.
The lawsuit alleges that the new policy deprives affected Vermonters of due process and equal protection of the laws.
