Connecticut Health Insurance Exchange To Be Self-Sustaining

Connecticut officials say the state's health insurance marketplace next year will become the first in the nation that's financially self-sustaining, relying on revenue generated by the organization. Access Health CT was launched 19 months ago, offering health insurance plans to individuals and small businesses.During its first year, Access Health CT operated solely on federal funds allocated under the Affordable Care Act.

Members of Access Health's board of directors recently voted to increase the assessment the exchange charges on insurance plan premiums. Officials say it will enable the organization to cover its own day-to-day operations.

CEO Jim Wadleigh says the increase for the typical consumer amounts to about six cents per day. He says the organization's ultimate goal is to become completely self-sustaining, without having to rely on such assessments.
