Springfield YMCA President Resigns

The well regarded leader of the YMCA of Greater Springfield, Massachusetts – the second oldest Y in the country – has resigned.

The Y announced Tuesday that CEO Kirk Smith plans to leave at the end of June for an executive position with the YMCA in Florida.

Jeffrey Poindexter, newly appointed Springfield YMCA board chairman, said a nationwide search will be conducted for a new leader for the local Y.  Poindexter praised Smith saying that under his leadership the Y had become more inclusive and diverse, expanded its pre-school program, and became involved in a number of community causes.

" With his leadership he has made a large difference," said Poindexter.

The Springfield Y operates in 14 cities and towns with 115,000 members.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
