Vermont Senate To Take Up New Gun Restrictions

wikipedia commons

The Vermont Senate is set to confront one of the most hotly debated bills of the 2015 legislative session — one tightening rules for firearms possession.

The bill includes new provisions for reporting to the federal background check system when someone has been adjudicated by a court to be mentally ill and a danger to him- or herself or others.

It also includes new authority for state law enforcement officials to prosecute someone for being a felon in possession of a firearm — for certain classes of violent felonies.

It does not include the original provision that most angered gun-rights advocates. That provision would have required background checks for private gun sales, except those between immediate family members.

The Senate is set to debate the bill on Tuesday.
