Another Berkshires community is attempting to ban businesses from using plastic shopping bags and other items like Styrofoam.Following voter approval in Great Barrington in 2013, people in Williamstown are hoping to put two articles banning plastic bags and polystyrene up for votes during Williamstown’s annual town meeting May 19th. Brad Verter is helping to lead the effort Greening Williamstown.

“So far there’s been tremendous support,” Verter said. “I’ve gone out of my way to try to be sure that everyone is well-informed especially the business community. They’re after all the ones that have to bear the brunt of compliance so I’ve been in touch with the chamber of commerce.”

About a dozen Massachusetts communities have passed such bans. Articles due by March 30th require 10 signatures to be listed on the town meeting warrant.
