The NRC held meetings with the media and the public on Thursday to explain the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant’s decommissioning process.
Vermont Yankee permanently ceased operations on December 29th and is beginning what could be a 60-year decommissioning process. Chief of Reactor Decommissioning Bruce Watson provided a brief timeline. "Vermont Yankee would be placed in a period of dormancy from 2016 to 2068. The actual dismantling and decommissioning from 2069 to 2073 and site restoration from 2073 to 2075.”
Decommissioning costs are estimated to be $1.2 billion.
