Former School Employee Convicted Of Theft

A former teacher at a vocational school in Springfield, Massachusetts has been convicted on larceny charges for stealing cash from a student fundraising activity.

A district court judge sentenced former Putnam Vocational High School teacher Ann Berry to three years probation with 240 hours of community service. An internal audit in 2011 revealed a number of scams by several school employees.  City Councilor Tim Rooke was on the audit committee at the time.

" What jumped out at me was the gross culture of entitlement that seemed to be breeding among a small group of teachers and administrators."

Four employees of the school were fired and two others resigned.  Former employee Sherry Suber agreed to repay $14,000 to avoid prosecution.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
