More Screening For Guns Among Newtown Proposals

CT.gov

Mental health suitability screenings for gun owners and sellers, and consolidating smaller emergency management dispatch centers are among the proposals being considered by members of a state commission crafting public policy recommendations in light of the 2012 Newtown school shooting.

The Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, created by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, met Friday to review possible recommendations by working groups focused on law enforcement, school safety and mental health. The commission, created in January 2013, hopes to soon submit its final report to the governor.

The school safety working group recommended an "all hazards" approach to risk management instead of focusing on preventing an active shooter event, as occurred in Newtown.

Some commission members expressed dismay about the spate of shootings that have occurred since Newtown.
