Ex-Hampden Court Clerk Denies Taking Bail Money

The former assistant clerk and bail magistrate at Massachusetts’ Hampden Superior Court has pleaded not guilty to stealing thousands of dollars in bail money.

William Eason was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges of use of an official position to secure unwarranted privilege and larceny over $250.

As part of his duties, Eason took bail money.

Prosecutors say the 61-year-old Eason, who worked at the court for 26 years, sometimes took bail money and used it for personal expenses. Although between September 2011 and June 2012, he always repaid the money, prosecutors say he eventually stopped doing so and took almost $11,000 between June 2012 and February 2013.

Eason's lawyer, former Hampden District Attorney William Bennett, says all the money was repaid.
