The Massachusetts’ attorney general’s office has announced a former Hampden Superior Court clerk has been charged with taking several thousands of dollars in bail money.
William Eason has been charged with two counts of “Use of an Official Position to Secure Unwarranted Privilege” and larceny, according to Martha Coakley’s office.
An investigation revealed that from September 2011 till June 2012, Eason allegedly collected bail money and took a portion to pay personal bills. He would then repay the bail with personal money. From June 2012 until February 2013, Eason allegedly continued to take bail money, but stopped paying it back, taking more than $10,000.
An assistant clerk in Hampden Superior Court for more than 26 years, Eason was suspended from his duties pending the investigation and resigned earlier this month. He will be arraigned on March 18 in Springfield District Court.
