VT Lawmakers Look At Establishing 10-Cent Bag Fee

Vermont lawmakers are looking at a bill that would establish a 10-cent fee for disposable carryout bags.

The fee would be imposed on bags "composed of plastic, paper or other single-use material provided by a retail establishment."

According to the bill, the fee would not apply to produce bags, prescription drug bags, newspaper sleeves or dry cleaning bags.

The Vermont Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy walked through the bill Friday morning.

One place where a bag fee has been enacted is the District of Columbia, where each disposable bag from a food or alcohol business costs 5 cents extra. A portion goes toward the vendor and the rest goes to the Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Fund.
