Former Massachusetts Treasurer Tim Cahill took the stand for a second day in his public corruption trial on Friday.
Prosecutors say he used taxpayer-funded lottery ads to boost his faltering 2010 gubernatorial campaign.
Cahill spent two hours on the witness stand Thursday, answering questions from his lawyer.
Under cross examination Friday, prosecutor Jim O'Brien pressed Cahill repeatedly about why he authorized ads for the state lottery as his 2010 independent gubernatorial campaign faltered.
Cahill said he approved the ads to defend the lottery against attack ads run by the Republican Governors Association, which he feared could damage the lottery's image and hurt sales.
When Cahill finished testifying, the defense and prosecution rested. The judge said closing arguments will be on Tuesday.
