Two New York state lawmakers from Rockland County and relatives of a victim of the Parkland, Florida school shooting will be in Albany today. They’ll be joined by other lawmakers and students in calling for passage of a law named for the victim.
Alyssa Alhadeff died in the 2018 school shooting. Her cousins, Rockland natives Jadyn and Jordan Turner will join lawmakers to call for passage of Alyssa’s Law. Democrats state Senator David Carlucci and Assemblymember Ellen Jaffee will be on hand as the sponsors of the legislation that requires a panic alarm in public schools that can silently and directly notify law enforcement of an emergency situation. The call to pass the law comes a few days ahead of the two-year anniversary of the February 14 school shooting. Alhadeff’s parents have been working with lawmakers to pass this legislation in every state. About a year ago, the bill was signed into law in Alhadeff’s native New Jersey.
