Orange County Land Trust Protects Forest Area Near Greenwood Lake

A land trust has protected property in New York’s Orange County. The property has ties to a Hudson River School artist and the Harlem Renaissance.

The Orange County Land Trust has announced the protection of 73 acres of forest near Greenwood Lake in the Town of Warwick. This Land Trust project is part of an ongoing effort to protect habitat buffering the Doris Duke Wildlife Sanctuary section of Sterling Forest State Park. Land Trust officials say Hudson River School Artist Jasper Cropsey painted his 1845 work “View of Greenwood Lake, New Jersey” from the site. And the property was once part of Greenwood Forest Farms, the first African-American resort community in New York state. In addition, the forest contains habitats identified as “significant” by the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Natural Heritage Program.
