NYS Law About Salary History Is In Effect

A law concerning salary history that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed over the summer became effective Monday.

The law Cuomo signed in July bans employers from asking job applicants about their salary histories. Democrat David Carlucci, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, says the aim is to help eliminate the gender pay gap. He says some employers used the salary history question to justify low pay for women, especially women of color. The new law bans the salary history question in both the private and public sectors. Bronx Democrat Marcos Crespo sponsored the bill in the Assembly.
