New York’s two U.S. senators are calling on a federal regulator to suspend construction of a pipeline expansion that passes through the Hudson Valley until independent health and safety reviews are completed.
Democratic Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to halt expansion on the AIM, or Algonquin Incremental Market, pipeline until the reviews are finished. Schumer says he has serious concerns with the project, including about safety given the pipeline’s proximity to the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County. The senators’ call comes a month after a number of New York state lawmakers penned a letter to FERC in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s February 29 directive to have an independent safety analysis to determine if the pipeline poses a risk to Indian Point and halt construction until the analysis is completed.
