New York state has begun holding hearings at the state Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany on a proposal to close the Indian Point nuclear plant for part of each summer to protect fish during spawning season.
The environmental group Riverkeeper says the annual shutdowns of the plant in Buchanan for 42 to 92 days each summer would protect Hudson River fish during the early stage of life.
Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi argues the outages would hurt air quality by forcing greater reliance on fossil fuels.
Nappi says that Indian Point is "fully protective of life in the Hudson River."
