The head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has responded to a New York congresswoman’s concerns about a proposed pipeline expansion near Westchester County-based Indian Point.
The NRC chair, in a written reply to Congresswoman Nita Lowey, says that Indian Point-owner Entergy Nuclear submitted to the NRC a detailed analysis of potential hazards, and based on this and NRC review, the NRC has determined that the proposed Algonquin Incremental Market, or AIM, project does not add significant safety risk and so further NRC review and approval is not required. Lowey, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, had penned a letter to the NRC chair in November, asking that Entergy be required to further assess the risk of an accident from the proposed pipeline expansion. Lowey says she will continue to monitor the issue to ensure that safety remains a top priority.
