Poll Shows Congressman Maloney Leading Hayworth

A Time Warner Cable News / Siena College poll released Thursday night of New York’s 18th Congressional District has the incumbent Democrat leading by eight points.

In a rematch, the poll has Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney with 50 percent of the vote over former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, who garners 42 percent. The telephone poll of 590 likely voters shows Maloney leads bigger with Democrats than Hayworth does with Republicans; however, she has a seven-point lead with Independents. Hayworth in June won the Independence Party primary. Maloney has an 11-point lead in Orange County and much smaller leads in the remaining counties. The 18th District includes all of Orange and Putnam Counties along with parts of Dutchess and Westchester. Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg says Maloney is viewed more favorably than Hayworth. He says that with nearly seven weeks to go until Election Day, this race could be a nail-biter until the final votes are counted.
