New Tappan Zee Bridge Loan Brought Into Question

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Several environmental advocacy groups have lodged a formal protest against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan to help pay for a new Tappan Zee Bridge using $511 million in loans from a clean water fund.

The New York League of Conservation Voters, Environmental Advocates of New York and other groups wrote Tuesday to the state's Environmental Facilities Corporation, urging its board members to reject what they say is an improper use of money that's dedicated to drinking water and water quality projects. The corporation is set to consider Cuomo's plan on Thursday. The Democratic governor says Environmental Facilities Corp. loans to the Thruway Authority will fund measures to protect the Hudson River and marine life while building a new span to replace the 60-year-old bridge.
