A New York State Assemblyman says he arranged for bus transportation for those who want to join in opposing a controversial water pipeline construction project in Orange County. Construction resumes this morning, and is expected to cross a town line.
Democrat Assemblyman James Skoufis says opponents were to be taken from Woodbury Town Hall to the Woodbury border with the Village of Kiryas Joel, where a pipeline project is underway to connect the village to a backup well in the Town of Cornwall, as well to the primary water source, the Catskill Aqueduct in New Windsor. Those in opposition contend proper permits are not in place for the entire well project, and pipeline construction should cease until they are. After the issue of trying to stop the pipeline construction ended up in court Friday, Democratic Orange County Legislator Roxanne Donnery and Woodbury Supervisor John Burke agreed to avoid impeding work on the pipeline. The judge did not issue a stop-work order, as they requested, though he did say opponents had the right to peacefully protest near the site.
