New Police Chief Appointed

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan has made it official: Brendan Cox is the Albany Police Department’s new Chief of Police.

Cox succeeds Steven Krokoff, who announced his retirement in February and moved to Georgia. Cox, who has been acting chief since April 1st, holds a master’s degree in public administration. He says he'll continue to build upon APD’s strategic plan, which includes: the protection of safe travel for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians; building trusting relationships between Albany youth and police; and working with all stakeholders to build healthy, safe, and positive communities throughout the city.

Under City Code, the Albany Common Council can confirm or reject the appointment within 45 days of receiving written notification, but if the Council doesn’t act within that timeframe, the appointment is considered confirmed.

Cox has been on the force since 1994.

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
