On-air questions: On March 6, 1820, President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise. The measure admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state, which was balanced out by admitting Maine as a free state. The Compromise was effectively repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, which allowed settlers in those territories to determine if they would allow slavery or not.
