Founded in 1972, The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia is a touring children’s theatre whose productions incorporate whimsical puppets. The company has a global audience, having performed for over four million spectators on four continents.
They will perform their stage adaptation of Leo Lionni’s exquisitely crafted Caldecott Honor books Swimmy, Frederick, and Inch By Inch on Sunday, January 26th at 2pm at The Mahaiwe in Great Barrington, MA.
Swimmy is a tiny fish who uses ingenuity to fend off danger; Frederick, a poetic mouse, makes everyday life an artful experience; and the third story is about a lovable inchworm who shares his facility for measuring absolutely everything. The show features an assortment of innovative puppetry styles and imaginative lighting techniques.
Jim Morrow is Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s Artistic Director, a position he has held since 1991. After completing his theatre studies training at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Jim began his professional theatre career in 1978 touring as a performer with Mermaid, throughout North America, the United Kingdom and Japan. In 1987, Jim attended the Institut International de la Marionnette’s puppetry studies program in Charleville-Mezieres, France, where he learned the art of Muppet construction and manipulation for film and TV, with the late Jim Henson. As well as serving as Artistic Director of Mermaid Theatre, his other duties include adapting many of the world’s best-known children’s storybooks into full stage productions that tour to major theatres around the world.
