Confounding and confusing events 11/14/22

On the archeology front a discovery was made in Italy of bronze that were produced sometime around the 1st century BC in Tuscany. It has been hailed as an exceptional discovery of nearly two dozen of these statues found in thermal baths which apparently acted as a preservative for them. The ancients were pretty clever, what will they discover of us, plastic in the ocean.

As food prices soar, some interesting opportunities have appeared on the internet (I am not vouching for the veracity of these) but for instance, you can get $80.00 a month in gift cards by answering a series of questions on Survey Junkie You can also scan your grocery bar codes for free gift cards and watch marketing videos and earn up to $225.00 per month. Good Luck

Bloomberg is reporting that China’s producer prices turned negative which is a clear warning signal for the global economy. The producer’s prices reflect those sums charged by Chinese companies at the factory door and fell for the first time in almost two years by 1.3%.

Democrats in a surprise to pollsters, the media and, in particular, Republicans held off the wave which now looks more like some slightly rolling seas. The Republicans are almost certain to take the House, (there is a surprising possibility they won’t) but with a very slim majority, and the Senate remains in Democratic control, win or lose in Georgia. Election deniers lost in all their races, while Mr. Trump faired not so well with his endorsements. Another interesting month.

You might ask how Democrats held off big losses, and that was primarily by driving turnout from their base, winning over independent voters who seemed not to be prepared to accept the Republican’s messages in most respects a negative narrative with no solution offered- and the Gen Z’s coming out in significant numbers. The other factor which also clearly came into play was the abortion issue which had several measures on the ballot, all of which passed, including in the State of Kentucky, which is deeply red. The Republicans clearly missed that point like I believe Democrats initially had missed the inflation message. I did not see the rejection of Republicans by independent voters coming. Democratic insiders tell me election results line up with internal Senate polls apparently less so in the House. You might remember right before November 8, Speaker Pelosi said that the Democrats would do better than expected.

Congresswomen Stefanik endorsed Mr. Trumps run for president which he is likely to announce on Nov. 15, 2022. Former Governor Pataki and Franklin County Republican leader Ray Scollin are quoted as saying the GOP would be better off with Trump gone. Scollin went so far as to say he hopes she Ms. Stefanik ends her ties to him. There are rumblings throughout the GOP about what to do with Trump or without him.

Science Alert reports scientists have figured out when our sun will die and how. They calculate its about 5 billion years away, so I’m not losing sleep.

General Mark Miley, Chair of the Joint Chiefs, advises now is the time for peace talks in the Ukraine. Let’s hope both sides listen.

The SUNY system is having financial troubles on some campus’s including Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Canton. The deficits are $7.8 million at Plattsburgh and $5.5 million at both the others. SUNY has decreased support for years; thus, it may be time to recalculate and increase it. These schools are valuable to the SUNY systems, their students, and the communities in which they operate.

What caused Gen Zs to vote, in a word climate change and they overwhelmingly supported Democrats in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and New Hampshire. Will R’s get the message or keep on denying.

Is Georgia still important for Democrats, if only to neutralize Senator Manchin.

Mexico remains the US’s top trading partner according to Freight Waves with total trade (imports and exports) of $67.4 billion last month, while Canada was #2 with $66.5 billion, clearly the USMCA is working.

  • Recent news reports indicate that Justice Alito assured Senator Kennedy in 2005 that he was not a threat to Roe v. Wade. These recollections were contained in Senator’s Kennedy’s diary, and would likely be admitted in a court of law as a contemporaneous writing, which is an exception to the Hearsay Rule, and maybe be a business record. This is, of course, just another bit of evidence of how duplicitous Justice Alito, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch actually are.
  • Former Representative, Tom Davis, a moderate Republican who served seven terms in Congress from northern Virginia, was commenting on the failure of candidates to participate in debates and Town Hall Meetings, and he is quoted as saying, “People don’t feel that duty anymore” adding “When they say I went home and talked to my constituents, they are talking to their base.” Nothing could describe the actions of Representative Stefanik any more clearly as she does not represent a significant portion of her constituency, but also doesn’t want to hear from them.
