U.S. Senators: Funding For PFOA, PFOS Cleanup Is Further Along

New York’s two U.S. senators say their amendment authorizing $45 million to reimburse communities and states for cleaning up PFOA and PFOS contamination passed in their chamber.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand say their amendment to the Fiscal Year 2019 Defense Appropriations bill, if signed into law, would allow the Air Force and National Guard to use federal funds to repay local water authorities and states for expenses incurred in the treatment of PFAS in drinking water, which was a result of the Air Force’s or the National Guard’s activities. Schumer notes such would be the case for Newburgh, where New York determined that PFOS originated at Stewart Air National Guard Base from the historic use of firefighting foam.
