Forest fires, earthquakes and the impeachment of the president have made for a high-stakes start to 2020 — reminding us all the importance of working together toward the greater good. This month, we’ll continue hearing the impeachment trial of President Trump and look forward to our Fund Drive Feb. 10. We’ll also celebrate Black History Month and Presidents Day.
Black History Month dates back to 1915. To celebrate African American life and history, WAMC will have two specials this month. A New York Minute In History – a podcast with co-hosts Devin Lander and Lauren Roberts — will explore slavery in New York and specifically the resistance to the institution. Lander and Roberts speak with area experts and tour a historic home in Albany that is living a new life as a museum depicting the history of its previous occupants.
Airing Friday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. on The Best of Our Knowledge, Anna Mae Duane, an associate professor of English and director of the American Studies Program at the University of Connecticut, did research on The New York African Free School that was established while slavery was still legal in New York. Duane discovered the remarkable stories of two young men who played a huge role in the abolition movement and tells their story in her new book “Educated for Freedom: The Incredible Story of Two Fugitive Schoolboys Who Grew Up to Change a Nation.”
On Monday night, Feb. 3, Iowa Caucus goers will gather across the state in the first contest of this year's presidential nominating process. Then, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, New Hampshire holds the first primary election. WAMC will offer special coverage of both contests.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, we’ll provide special coverage of the Nevada Caucus and on the following Saturday, Feb. 29, we’ll air the South Carolina primary at 7 p.m. Please check WAMC’s website wamc.org and our social media pages for updates.

This month on Person Place Thing, host Randy Cohen sits down with Frances Bronet, a distinguished educator, leader at the forefront of interdisciplinary learning and President of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. That episode airs Feb. 7. Cohen will also have an in-depth conversation with Budd Heyman, MD on Feb. 28. Dr. Heyman has been the medical director of Prison Health Services at Bellevue Hospital Center for more than 26 years, and is a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Health. Person Place Thing airs Friday nights at 10:30 p.m.
On The Academic Minute, featured schools include Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa and the New York Institute of Technology. Cornell College professors will discuss the search for love, how zebrafish could help us fight Parkinson’s disease and how to capture more CO2. New York Institute of Technology faculty will examine early detection of HIV, using social media as a doctor and helping children with autism.
Other topics of cutting-edge research this month include mentoring at-risk students, contemporary fiction and global education. There’s something for everyone on The Academic Minute. Tune in to the program each weekday at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. on WAMC.
