New York State Senator George Amedore has announced that he will not seek re-election to the New York State Senate in 2020.

Amedore, a Republican who has represented the 46th Senate District since 2015, said in a statement released Friday, "As I have said in the past, I did not intend to be a career politician, and at this time, this is the right decision for my family and me.”

Prior to his time in the Senate, Amedore served in the New York State Assembly, representing the 105th district from 2007-2013.

New York's 46th Senate District covers all of Montgomery and Greene counties, as well as parts of Albany, Schenectady and Ulster Counties.

Democrat Michelle Hinchey, daughter of the late Congressman Maurice Hinchey, is already running for the seat. Hinchey thanked Amedore for his service in a Friday evening statement.

"I’m excited to continue meeting and working with families across the 46th to find ways that we can improve the lives of those in our community," said Hinchey.

Jeff Collins of Woodstock, who also ran in the district last year before throwing support behind fellow Democrat Pat Strong, is also seeking Amedore's seat in 2020.

Collins also released a Friday evening statement. Outlining his campaign priorities, Collins said in part:

"New York State has the opportunity to move in a different direction. It's been made increasingly clear that it's time for new leadership in SD-46."
