Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and one of the nationwide celebrations is taking place in New York’s Capital Region. Ahead of his performance Monday at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, musician Guy Davis spoke to WAMC about the holiday and how King’s legacy still has a voice in our national debates…

"There has to come a time when the principles that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King guided us by are used to make our communities whole," Davis said. "I'm talking about youth and police on a regular basis having interactions such as meals together, such as community meetings in which guns do not play a part."

Davis, a folk singer, is the son of actors and activists Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Guy Davis performed at the WAMC Pete Seeger Concert in 2013.
