Newspaper Chain Considers, Rejects Building Gun-owner Database

The publisher of a major newspaper chain has thrown cold water on a report that it was considering building state-by-state databases of people who have the right to carry concealed firearms.

The story appeared Friday on the website dailycaller.com:  "Civitas Media, which owns 88 newspapers in 12 states and more than 100 total publications, is planning to use public records requests to build their databases, according to an internal Civitas email obtained by the Buckeye Firearms Association in Ohio."

The report left Republican Senator Kathy Marchione of Halfmoon quite concerned: "The idea of putting people's name out there because they carry concealed... it's just outrageous."

Following dailycaller's posting, Civitas Media announced that it considered then rejected creating a gun database.  In December 2012 thousands of people responded thru social media and telephone calls after The Journal News posted an online database of local gun-permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.
