Albany, NY – Former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich pulled an upset in South Carolina, taking first place in the state's Republican presidential primary over the presumed favorite for the nomination, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
The two traded barbs at their first debate in the primary state of Florida, with Romney acting as aggressor to Gingrich's more nuanced approach, a reversal of character that could signal that the GOP nomination battle will last until the last possible moment.
These election developments have set the stage for President Obama's fourth State of the Union address, part of which will likely outline his reelection platform.
How will the speech play into the election? Will Obama make a strong showing, or has the GOP race thus far made him revise his approach?
On today's edition of Vox Pop, your take on the GOP presidential race, the State of the Union address, and what effect one may have on the other in the lead up to November. WAMC's Alan Chartock hosts.
